On the 23rd of September 2009 people on the eastern states of Australia awoke to an amazing site. The glow in the sky could only be described as something similar to that of a major bush fire nearby.

cc83dOver the news they described the event as once in a life time and the worst dust storm on record. Flight were diverted from Sydney airport to Brisbane and a staggering 75 thousand tones of dirt was being dumped on Australia every hour.

These shots are taken around 7.30am on the 5D Mark II. On returning home my hands were stained red from the dirt and my camera gear was coated as well. They estimated that the clean up bill is in the 10’s of Millions as a result of this even. By mid day it was mostly gone with just a slight haze.

I have uploaded a video to Vimeo [link] showing you some of the shots taken and how amazing the light was straight out of the camera.

This is a 8 image stitch put together in PtGui.

I was heading south to Coffs Harbour all day, from Brisbane. It just got worse and worse, gave me the biggest headache. My friend on the Sunshine Coast had a severe asthma attack and died momentarily, he was revived at the hospital. Intense stuff, never forget it. Great photo too.

Poignant photography.
We did not experience the Dust storm way down here in Victoria but were none-the-less amazed at its ferocity but also its beauty as well, an occurrence that does not happen often and to catch it on film is awe-inspiring....:iconbigheartplz:

ha ha... no idea. That is the meta data getting all mixed I guess as the image was stitched in PtGui and not Photoshop.
